My last bit of advice would be to fully max your shield first with tonic upgrades, then work on maxing out your vigor bar, and do HP last. Shields are pretty much an infinitely re spawning HP bar so its better than boosting health. And after that, I find that having a ton more vigor much more useful for keeping the pressure on mobs.
