The goal, of course, was to strive for self-government for Ireland and a break with Britain. Daniel O'Connell organized the Loyal National Repeal Association in 1840. WebIn February 1932, the Fianna Fáil party was elected to lead the Irish Free State government. On 18 March 1932, the new government suspended the Public Safety Act, lifting the ban on a number of organisations including the Irish Republican Army. Some IRA political prisoners were also released around the same time.
